AMSA held a remarkable award ceremony and fellow reunion on September 29, 2022, at the Industrials Club, in Mexico City, Mexico, in which 140 guests, including 40 OMI MEX alumni, gathered. AMSA presented the 2021 AMSA award to the Carlos Slim Foundation for its great vision and commitment to the Mexican healthcare system.
Notable guests included members of the AMSA Corporate Governance – Pablo Legoretta Creel (Founder and Honorary Life Chairman), Gerardo Legoretta Creel (Chairman of the Board), Alexander Von Perfall (Secretary), Carlos Creel Carrera (Board Member), Dr. Carlos Navarro Martinez (Board Member), Dr. Wolfgang Aulitzky (Board Member and OMI CEO), Concepción Creel de Legoretta (Board Member), Rebeca Sáenz (Executive Director), and Alejandra Struck Creel (Executive Committee Member),– Carlos Slim Domit (Slim Foundation), Dr. David Kershenobich (Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán), and representatives from the AMSA/OMI partner institutions, supporters, and donors.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Carlos Slim Foundation coordinated efforts with civil society organizations and Mexican businessmen to build a temporary COVID-19 unit and to manufacture the COVID-19 vaccine, AstraZeneca, which benefitted more than 150 million people in Latin America. These are undoubtedly two unprecedented efforts which have greatly impacted not only Mexico, but Latin America as a whole.
On this occasion, AMSA also took the opportunity to make a special recognition of two great leaders in the health sector, Dr. Guillermo Torre Amione, Rector of TecSalud and Vice President of Research at Tecnológico de Monterrey, and Dr. Francisco Moreno, Infectious Disease Specialist at the ABC Medical Center, who through social networks and media kept the population well informed on COVID-19 issues throughout the pandemic. This impeccable work still helps patients who have long-term effects of COVID-19 through support groups, workshops, and webinars.
