Donald G. Tober, an accomplished pianist, embraced the arts. In 2023, Barbara Tober commemorated her husband’s love of music by naming the Metropolitan Opera lobby Lobmeyr chandeliers in his honor and by donating a Steinway Grand Piano to the American Austrian Foundation, to be housed in the newly named Donald G. Tober Faculty Lounge at Schloss Arenberg.
Donald G. Tober was a successful businessman, celebrated philanthropist, and lifelong New Yorker. He served as Chairman and Owner of Sugar Foods Corporation for 60 years where he cherished his corporate team like a second family. Mr. Tober held posts as the Chairman of the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association, Vice Chairman of the Culinary Institute of America, and board member of the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association. He was proud to co-found New York’s Citymeals-on-Wheels program, which has commemorated his service by naming their board room the Donald G. Tober Conference Room.
Mr. Tober served on the board of the American Austrian Foundation and visited Schloss Arenberg during the Urology seminar in 2006. Committed to OMI’s mission, he never missed a Music for Medicine benefit. He and Barbara recognized the enormous contributions of the OMI faculty members for improving healthcare worldwide. So, it is fitting that the faculty lounge at Schloss Arenberg bears his name for the future.
