Bridging Continents: OMI and the European School of Urology Unite for Impact in Mexico

Sep 30, 2024

For more than 30 years, the Open Medical Institute has been training generations of newcoming urologists across the globe, solidifying the topic as one of our landmark courses. Almost three decades after the first Urology seminar took place in Salzburg, numerous doctors and therefore countless patients have benefitted from our leading faculty joining us to share their latest clinical and research findings. Only in Salzburg, we have trained Urologists from over 60 countries. Now, we are proud to bring back the seminar to Mexico in the continuous hope of expanding our impact in Latin America!

Faculty from multiple leading institutions joined the OMI throughout the years for our Urology courses, from Weill Cornell Medicine and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to our ultimate Urology partner: The European School of Urology (ESU). The ESU is a trailblazer in knowledge sharing and medical collaboration in the field and has a clear mission “to raise the level of urological care throughout Europe and beyond.” (ESU’s Uroweb, 2024). Through its membership, education, and research training founded on the concept of collaboration and utmost care for the patients, the OMI and ESU make a perfect couple.

Now in Mexico, we were privileged to host the course director, Dr. Evangelos N. Liatsikos, none other than the Chairman of the European School of Urology. Dr. Liatsikos’ first time with us in Mexico was in 2022, and he shares a bit of his experience coming back to OMI MEX this year:

“I had the pleasure to meet a motivated group of young urologists eager to learn and ‘thirsty’ for knowledge. It is really very inspiring for me to interact with such a group of young colleagues and contribute to building a solid foundation harmonized across Europe and Latin America. Faculty and fellows interacted and exchanged ideas in a very friendly environment.”

Conveying the ESU and OMI’s commitment to quality education, Dr. Liatsikos further states:
“The utmost goal of all our efforts is to educate and fascinate the young generation by providing them with a fully structured educational portfolio. Standardization of education has been the main goal when organizing different training activities.”

Leading the course along with Dr. Liatsikos, 18-year OMI faculty member Dr. Peter Schlegel, Managing Director of New York Men’s Health Medical Clinic, joined in to share his renowned expertise in male infertility and other topics surrounding his lifelong leading career in urology. Also from New York, we were joined by Dr. John P. Mulhall, Director of Male Sexual and Reproductive Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. From France, we welcomed Dr. Evanguelos Xylinas, professor at Paris Cité University in Paris and board member of the ESU. Lastly, bridging the international and local approaches in medicine, Dr. Mariano Sotomayor, former president of the Mexican Society of Urology, was our faculty member from Mexico.

The professors’ international background enriched the seminar experience for the fellows. What is regularly seen in our Salzburg seminars and what remains at the core of OMI is the broadening of perspectives made possible through the in-person interactions we proudly provide. The Urology seminar in Mexico was no different, all while representing a further step towards indeed broadening the scope of medical education worldwide.

Events like OMI MEX have been a source of excitement since my years as a medical student. Having the opportunity to learn from international faculty in Mexico is a privilege. The seminar inspired me to continue growing and to look forward to my next steps in Urology training worldwide, bringing back the best to my patients here.
Alec Anceno, MD

OMI MEX fellow from Mexico City

Beyond getting to know and exchanging ideas with a faculty of such extraordinary backgrounds, I deeply valued the new connections I made with my peers from across Mexico. I was pleased that Dr. Sotomayor was the local component, and all the faculty ensured strong, evidence-based approaches to universal Urology issues. The interactive nature of the discussions and the quality of the content made the seminar both engaging and highly beneficial.
Rodrigo Escalante, MD

OMI MEX fellow from Mexico City

The seminar exceeded all my expectations. I was pleasantly surprised by how much the faculty, whose work sets international standards for Urology, was truly committed to walking us through their latest findings. I’m going home with a renewed enthusiasm for Urology and a newfound ambition to set the standards that lead us to our highest objective as doctors: delivering excellent care to our patients.
Andres Gonzalez-DeRosenzweig, MD

OMI MEX fellow from Monterrey

I highly enjoyed the depth of the lectures, particularly those on Malignant Penile Lesions, HPV infection, and p16, which helped me expand my understanding of disease etiology. We also covered various treatment options, ranging from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation, offering a well-rounded view of management strategies. Dr. Liatsikos’ lecture truly caught my attention with its progression, and we emphasized the importance of multidisciplinarity in our practice.
Francisco Rafael Valencia Alvarez, MD

OMI MEX fellow from Mexico City

We counted with the participation of 29 Urology professionals across different hospitals and research institutions, and 20 of them were selected to present clinical cases from their home organizations. This solid format brought to Mexico inspired from the OMI seminars in Salzburg enables further integration among local professionals and the international faculty, and we are happy to continue witnessing this positive change among the medical community in Latin America one seminar after the other!
