Highlights from Gastrointestinal Cancer Patient Care in Mexico

Nov 14, 2024

From November 4–6, 2024, we hosted an intimate and impactful seminar in Mexico City: “Oncology: Gastrointestinal Cancers”, delivered in partnership with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). Renowned for its innovative research and world-class patient care, MSKCC ranks as the second-best cancer center in the United States, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report.

The seminar was directed by Dr. Garrett M. Nash, a leading figure in gastrointestinal oncology. Dr. Nash praised the “outstanding engagement and enthusiasm from participants representing Mexico and Latin America,” highlighting how the carefully planned sessions encouraged a collaborative learning experience. Dr. Nash noted that the seminar’s design allowed for a deep exploration of critical topics in Gastrointestinal cancer care, from prevention and diagnosis to complex treatment options. “It was truly inspiring to witness the collaborative spirit and passion among attendees as we advanced our understanding of Gastrointestinal cancer,” he shared.

Dr. Nash was joined by MSKCC colleagues Dr. Jacques C. Beauvais and Dr. Louise C. Connell, both assistant attending physicians. While Dr. Connell couldn’t attend on-site, she delivered engaging lessons through video conferencing, ensuring the seamless transmission of knowledge. The discussions covered essential aspects of Gastrointestinal cancer care, such as patient selection for surveillance, targeted therapies, and personalized treatment approaches, blending fundamental scientific concepts with actionable clinical insights.

The seminar’s intimate setting was intentional, fostering meaningful interactions among attendees and faculty, with opportunities for networking and future collaborations. Special thanks go to Dr. Nash, Dr. Beauvais, and Dr. Connell for their dedication and for volunteering their valuable time, making this event a success for all involved!

My favorite lecture was ‘Advanced Endoscopic Techniques for Gastrointestinal Cancers’ by Dr. Beauvais. The presentation was highly illustrative and allowed me to gather insights from both a lecturer and an institution considered references in oncology patient management. We were also introduced to techniques applicable to various medical contexts, which are particularly valuable for Mexico and Latin America.

I connected with colleagues from other institutions and specialties across Mexico. Outside the classroom, we exchanged ideas and clarified many questions with the outstanding faculty who volunteered their time at the seminar. The combination of lectures and discussions will impact the treatment options I offer my patients, allowing for individualized treatments that align with each patient’s expectations.

This is by far the most comprehensive and detailed seminar I have attended during my training in gastrointestinal oncology in Mexico. The insights and knowledge gained will have a profound impact on both my public and private practice. Dr. Nash’s lecture, ‘Management of Appendiceal Cancers’, was brilliantly presented with an evidence-based approach, which was particularly valuable given the rarity of this condition.
